Time flies when you’re having fun. It also flies when you start working full-time. So, I guess when you’re doing both, time moves even faster!
As my first full-time job in advertising, that’s exactly how I would describe it: fun and fast. I feel so unbelievably lucky to have landed in a place like DPR&Co. As cringey as it might sound, working in advertising is a dream come true. To think I’ve been doing this for almost two years is absolutely crazy.
So, when I was asked to write for our blog, I was a little stumped. What was my angle?
I could reveal the secrets of the advertising world, make a brash statement about the future of marketing, or rage-bait you with some overly dramatic, made-up title.
But the truth is, I don’t have an angle. Not yet anyway. And even if I did write something along those lines, would you believe me? My point exactly.
So instead, I thought I’d share three lessons I’ve learned along the way.
The first is the power of saying yes. Opportunities have a way of finding you, but they aren’t always as plentiful as you might think. Saying yes to opportunities and learning to ride that wave will take you to some pretty cool places.
The second is learning to be a sponge: soaking it all in, letting it slowly seep out, and then soaking it all in again. I’m fortunate to have worked alongside some very experienced colleagues, not only here at DPR&Co but also in previous jobs. There’s a wealth of knowledge out there, and I try to take in as much of it as I can, as often as I can.
Lastly is the strength in being nice. While not the most interesting of adjectives, it’s extremely effective. My understanding is that people want to work with nice people. I know I certainly do. One of the best parts of coming to work every day is getting to work with nice people. To put it simply, being nice has yet to let me down.
So, there you go. Take from it what you will, and at the very least, I hope it gives you a little insight into me, my process, and possibly my naivety.
To wrap this up, I really am having a lot of fun. And time really does feel like it’s whizzing past at a rate of knots. Check in with me in a year’s time, and I’m sure I’ll have a few more lessons to add to that list.
